The first day of school isn’t just about freshly waxed floors and sharpened pencils—it’s also a critical moment for your IT infrastructure. Whether you’re a charter school, private academy, or public district, technology is at the heart of student learning, staff productivity, and school safety. A few overlooked issues can quickly become a school-wide disruption.
To help you stay ahead, here’s a back-to-school IT checklist that every K-12 school should complete before the bell rings.
1. Audit Devices and Inventory
Take stock of every laptop, tablet, desktop, and smartboard. Confirm that devices are accounted for, functioning, and updated. Don’t forget teacher workstations and loaner devices.
Pro tip: Use this opportunity to update your asset management system so replacements and repairs are easier to track year-round.
2. Update Software & Security Patches
Make sure all devices are running the latest OS and software updates. Security vulnerabilities in outdated programs can open the door to ransomware attacks.
Focus areas: Antivirus software, firewalls, learning platforms, and productivity tools like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
3. Test Wi-Fi Coverage and Network Speed
Is your school’s Wi-Fi ready for a full building of students and staff streaming videos, uploading assignments, and accessing cloud-based tools? Perform a full network speed test and identify weak coverage zones.
Consider a bandwidth upgrade if your usage has grown or more devices will be in use this year.
4. Review Cybersecurity Protocols
Reset passwords for key systems, test backup and recovery procedures, and ensure all faculty have completed basic cybersecurity training. Students should also receive age-appropriate guidance on online safety.
Must-haves: Multifactor authentication, endpoint protection, content filtering, and a clear incident response plan.
5. Inspect Classroom Tech
From interactive whiteboards to document cameras, classroom tech often goes untouched over summer. Plug everything in, test functionality, and make sure drivers and software are updated.
Coordinate with teachers to troubleshoot anything ahead of time—before the first lesson.
6. Update Access Control and Student Info Systems
Ensure your SIS and LMS are synced and ready with new schedules, rosters, and parent contacts. If your school uses keycards or facial recognition for building entry, validate that student and staff permissions are correctly assigned.
7. Test Emergency Communication Systems
Can your admin team reach every classroom instantly? Can you broadcast updates to families? From PA systems to parent apps, make sure every emergency communication tool works as intended.
8. Schedule IT Support Coverage
Even with the best prep, issues will arise during the first few weeks. Ensure your internal IT team—or managed service provider—is ready for rapid response.
